What is a CreaSpaTreat?

The time is almost here. It feels a bit like waiting for Christmas morning when I was a kid. It was not so much the presents, but more the anticipation. The surprise and delight was grand. I’m always hoping to get that feeling back. As an adult, I find it rather difficult to acheive.

But, maybe I should back up. For those who have not closely followed my journey, let me bring you up to speed. What exactly does CreaSpaTreat mean?

CreaSpaTreat is a word I invented to describe many things. By combining portions of three words, it feels like I have landed on something which sounds good to the ear and opens a curiosity path. Hopefully, when you first hear CreaSpaTreat you are enticed to learn to learn more. I think the sound of letters, rolling off the tongue have a lyrical characteristic. Maybe this new word, CreaSpaTreat will be easy to remember?

Now for the meaning of all these letters strung together in this order. Crea captures creativity, which probably makes a whole lot of sense to anyone who has been following my work. I think creativity is the root of human happiness. The expression of creativity can take any form, there are no rules. Problem solving, designing, music, art, cooking and even exercise can be a creative expression. Any activity which iterates something different from what was there before, involves a measure of creativity. You can tell creativity is at play when your mind is in a state of flow. That awesome state of consciousness when time passes with a beautiful rhythm. The opposite of watching the clock, hoping the day will end sooner.

The middle part of the word, might seem self-evident, which would be fine. Spa brings a few ideas to mind. Obviously the idea of a proper spa, preferably one which involves a vacation is a pleasing thought. I also think of being cared for in a way I might not always prioritize for myself. This dovetails into my main quest, how to experience a life I don’t need a vacation from? I want to bring back from my travels a little bit of what was exotic and wonderful to be appreciated in my life at home. The idea that a spa-kind-of-life can be self-generated and is attainable for all of us. The experience of visiting a spa can regenerate our hearts and minds, making everyday life more amazing and far less stressful.

Treat is another seemingly easy word to comprehend. But, there is a twist here. I also meant retreat. The specific definition I was am referring to is:

Retreat: a place of privacy or safety: refuge AND a period of group withdrawal for meditation, study or instruction

I am hoping to provide a safe space to gather, away from the worries of life to recharge our creative batteries. This could be viewed as a sacred time to reconnect with our inner selves, surrounded by the like-minded. By experiencing CreaSpaTreat, my aim is that we build a muscle memory which we can use to refocus ourselves on a daily basis, when we need to.

We don’t have to figure everything out on our own. Back in the old days on the prairies, there were circles of women who met regularly and shared their lives with each other. This was a source of comfort and counsel. They worked on creative projects which were essential to daily living. Instead of toiling away alone, they worked together. Men were no different in needing community support to create something large scale, like raising a barn. ‘Many hands makes light work’ and ‘a rising tide floats all boats,’ are sentiments which come to mind.

Fast forward to modern times. Innovations in technology are taking a toll. On one hand the democratization of information is fantastic. The opportunities to advance a single life, a community or even a whole country are making a difference to the lives of millions. But our ability to adapt is not keeping up to the pace of change. In these times of increasing prosperity, studies show we are not necessarily happier.

I want to get back to simpler times. Not to replicate the old days exactly, but rather to honour the wisdom. I like to think my Grandmothers would have enjoyed the combination of modern technology, the ability to meet new people from different walks of life and share our stories. In this endeavour we will be able to learn and grow through connection, just like we always have in times gone by.

If this sounds interesting, please stay-tuned to your email. The first round of invitations will land before the day is out, Pacific daylight savings time zone. We hope to see you in September!
